Social Care News: Care leavers - Who Cares? Trust unveils uniguide

Professionals who want to encourage more care leavers to go to university can now get extra support, thanks to a new guide out this week.

Figures show that only one to five per cent of care leavers get touniversity despite their new entitlements under the Children (LeavingCare) Act 2000. The Who Cares?

Trust has launched two guides about going for university - one for youngpeople and another for professionals and carers - to help improve thefigures.

Chief executive Susanna Cheal said: "We want to raise the bar forchildren and young people in care. Although going to university mightnot be everybody's choice, we must make the opportunity available forthose young people who want to try."

The guide for professionals and carers provides practical information,including guidance on the application process.
