Project: Shank

Mission: To give young offenders the chance to work on a media project about knife crime

Funding: £20,000 from Sunderland Youth Offending Service

Sunderland Youth Offending Service (YOS) has been working with Superkrush Films to create a DVD that looks at the consequences of knife crime.

The project started in February and aimed to get 15 young ex-offenders involved in the media project. The young people voluntarily attended a series of tailor-made drama and acting workshops over a 10-week period.

Each week the group would work closely with professional drama coaches and scriptwriters in a bid to enhance their skills. At first, the workshops consisted of drama exercises to build up the young people's trust and confidence, but they moved on to discussing issues affecting their lives as well as creating and developing ideas for a short film called Shank.
