Secondary Education: Pupils could miss a year of school

Five hundred primary school pupils in Barnet face missing the first year of secondary school because they are too old.

Barnet Council has decided that the children should move straight into year 8 because of the number of "over-age" children applying for places in Year 7. The council has set up a working group to tackle the problem of children being taught out of the appropriate year group.

"I have not come across this before but parents need to be concerned," said a spokeswoman for the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations.

"Year 7 is a very important transition stage for children - there is a huge difference between year 6 and 8. Children need time to adapt to the different style of learning in secondary school."
