Education News: Out of Year Children - Barnet studies its 'out of year' pupils

A working group has been set up in the London borough of Barnet to find new solutions to the problem of "out of year" children.

There are about 500 children of primary age in the borough who, because of their birth dates and other reasons, are a year older than their classmates.

The aim of the group is to investigate why Barnet has a comparatively high proportion of children "out of their age group", and consider what can be done.

Reports that children would be forced by the LEA to skip a year when they move to secondary school (Children Now, 12 May) were incorrect, the borough said.
