A Tough Transition: From primary to secondary school

Most children are happy at primary school, but experience a slump in wellbeing during the move up to secondary. Rebecca Coombes finds out how different schools are tackling the problem and easing the bridging process.

Matthew, aged 12, was a "bit worried" about going to secondary school, although his tone of voice suggests the prospect was terrifying. "Only one of my friends was coming with me, and we weren't in the same class," he says.

"I was also worried about transport because my sister, who goes to the same school, has missed her bus a few times."

Primary school hadn't been plain sailing either, because of bullying, and he was scared the same could happen again. However, Matthew was looking forward to doing science experiments and "just being in a different place".

In fact, Matthew, who now attends Bishop Rawstorne Church of England Language College, near Chorley in Lancashire, has made the transition from a tiny rural school to one more than 10 times its size remarkably well.
