In its consultation to inform the strategy, the Scottish Executive asked youth organisations how better links could be forged with schools and other providers, which education minister Peter Peacock has described as one of his "major preoccupations" when considering the future of the profession.
But an initial snapshot of responses forwarded to YouthLink Scotland suggests that nearly two-thirds of respondents would be against assimilation of youth work into the school curriculum. This stance is supported in YouthLink's own response to the consultation, which is based on discussions with other member organisations.
Alex Cole-Hamilton, YouthLink's senior parliamentary officer, said: "There's a fear in the sector at the moment that the executive wants to bury youth work in schools, almost preventing there being any external youth work.
