Scotland: Wheelchair advice must be acted on

Children should have more time to learn how to use wheelchairs, the Scottish Executive was told last week.

A review of NHS wheelchair services in Scotland says the executive mustdo more to help children who use the equipment. As well as givingchildren more time to learn how to use wheelchairs, the experts who didthe review said services should be made more child-friendly. The groupalso said children should have access to a multi-disciplinary team ofprofessionals when being assessed for wheelchairs.

Barnardo's recently published a report with Whizz-Kidz about wheelchairservices for children (Children Now, 7-13 June). John Watson, parliamentary and policy officer at Barnardo's Scotland, said: "Previousreports over three decades have highlighted the need for change, but tono avail. This time must be different."
