Upwardly mobile: Wheelchair scheme combines funding with expertise

Robyn Herbert receives one of the first wheelchairs through a new scheme launched in Tower Hamlets. Treasury minister Ed Balls launched the Whizz-Kidz and Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust pilot, which gives disabled young people access to customised mobility equipment, last week.

It is the first partnership of its kind bringing together funding,paediatric expertise and the facilities of Whizz-Kidz and a primary caretrust. Robyn's mum Gina said: "I didn't think that a four-year-old wouldbe able to drive a powered wheelchair but I was amazed when I saw thewheelchair in her assessment. It fits Robyn perfectly - it's not as bigor bulky as I'd imagined it would be." The pilot includes activitiessuch as exhibition days, wheelchair skills training and outreachactivities.
