NHS competition plans to offer children choice of wheelchair services

1 min read Health
Disabled children are to be able to choose their preferred wheelchair service from a range of providers under Department of Health (DoH) plans to introduce more choice and competition into the NHS.

From April 2012, children referred for wheelchair services will pick from a range of qualified providers that meet NHS quality standards, prices and contracts. These could be NHS providers, private sector companies, or voluntary or third sector organisations.

The DoH is extending this increased level of choice to eight areas of NHS care, which also include continence services for children.

Every locality in England will be expected to offer more choice in a minimum of three services by September 2012 – either from the recommended list of eight services or in another community or mental health service that is a high local priority.
