Scotland: MPs give backing to Antisocial Bill

Scottish MPs have voted in favour of the executive's Antisocial Behaviour Bill despite strong opposition to some of its measures from children's groups.

The Bill will give police powers to disperse groups of young people and will also allow the electronic tagging of children.

But in a parliamentary debate last week, Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish National Party's justice spokeswoman, argued that giving the police powers to "disperse groups that are committing no offences" would do "little to build relationships between the police and young people".

Scotland's minister for communities, Margaret Curran, said the executive regarded tagging "not as a punishment, but as a way to help to support young people who are in danger".
