The Scottish Executive's consultation document Action Framework for Children and Young People's Health in Scotland, published last week, sets out how health services for children and young people will be developed over the next 10 years.
It outlines what needs to be done to improve services for young people in areas including mental health, transitional care and services in remote areas.
Paediatric services in Scotland have traditionally focused on young people aged up to 14. The document recommends that the age limit be moved to 16, with extra flexibility for 16- to 18-year-olds.
The framework says NHS boards should develop clear arrangements for the transition from child to adolescent services and from adolescent to adult care by 2008. National standards should also be developed for transitional arrangements for young people by 2008.
