Health News: Scotland

Children to speak out on healthcare Children in Scotland will be able to influence healthcare policy from September.

Eight children between the ages of 14 and 21 will join the YoungPeople's Health Advisory Board, a group run by NHS Education Scotland, the Scottish Executive and the country's children's commissioner,Kathleen Marshall.

Mary Boyle, programme director at NHS Education Scotland (NES), saidprevious young people's groups, in areas such as mental health anddiabetes, had focused on "tweaking" policy after it had beendecided.

By contrast, young people would now be asked their views before policywas designed, working with key figures in the executive's healthdepartment and the NES. Boyle added that the project also intended toask for younger children's opinions by approaching schools directly.

Interviews for young people who are interested in participating start atthe end of June.
