Although his appointment has yet to be officially announced, a circular sent to health organisations by Scotland's chief medical officer has revealed his role will be to provide expert advice to the Scottish Executive and to promote and redesign children's health services.
The role also involves supporting the implementation of children's health recommendations from the national framework for service change in the NHS, a major review of how services are delivered in Scotland that is due out in May.
Jamieson, a paediatric cardiac surgeon, will begin in the role on 4 April, working two days a week for the next two years while continuing part-time in his current position at Yorkhill NHS Trust, where Scotland's largest children's hospital is based.
