Children in Scotland will be entitled to two hours' physical education per week under the Scottish Executive's new plans.
Education minister Peter Peacock said pupils would have a wider choice of activities, including aerobics. Sportscotland chairman Alastair Dempster hailed the plans, which include recruiting 400 more PE teachers, as a "huge breakthrough".
A quarter of Scottish boys and two-fifths of girls are not active enough to meet minimum guidelines for health, according to the Scottish Health Survey.
