Scotland: Executive to boost PE variety and time

Children in Scotland will be entitled to two hours' physical education per week under the Scottish Executive's new plans.

Education minister Peter Peacock said pupils would have a wider choice of activities, including aerobics. Sportscotland chairman Alastair Dempster hailed the plans, which include recruiting 400 more PE teachers, as a "huge breakthrough".

A quarter of Scottish boys and two-fifths of girls are not active enough to meet minimum guidelines for health, according to the Scottish Health Survey.
