Scotland: Executive to spend more on children

1 min read
The Scottish Executive is to raise its total funding for education and young people by more than 40 per cent by 2007/08.

As part of its spending review, announced last week by finance minister Andy Kerr, more money will be allocated to developing "robust" inspection and quality assurance schemes for children's services and social care: from 5m in 2005/06, to 36.8m in 2007/08.

It also hopes to increase teacher numbers to 53,000 by 2007, and has committed to increasing the allowance for foster carers.

The executive is also redeploying funding for delivering improvements in frontline children's services.

Total central government spending, including specific grants, on education and young people will rise to 866m in 2007/08. Of that, 345m will go to schools and 224m, up from 161m in 2004/05, to children, young people and social care.
