The money will allow Edinburgh's youth council, for which elections are now taking place, to fund various projects. Adam Harrington, a member of the council's youth task force, said: "This year the budget goes towards setting up the youth council, but from next April the council decides how to use it."
The youth council is part of Edinburgh's 10-year youth strat- egy, which was unveiled last week. Backed by 1.5m over three years, it requires council services to consult young people and pledges to expand services.
Last week also saw the start of Edinburgh's Dialogue Youth pilot at St Thomas of Aquin's High School. The pilot of the Scotland-wide youth information project involves more than 670 pupils, who will each receive a Young Scot smart card. Edinburgh Council intends to launch the scheme city-wide next year.
