Scotland: Duke of Edinburgh scheme cuts crime

The evaluation, commissioned by the Scottish Award Office, was based on interviews with 14- to 25-year-old participants in New Start, a project set up to widen access to the award to young offenders.

Evaluators looked at the progress of 68 young participants in March 2004, before following up their progress in February this year. The follow-up interviews showed reduced levels of offending in three out of four young people questioned.

Barry Fisher, assistant award secretary for Scotland, said: "We've now got firm evidence that this has been effective."

The award office hopes to use the evaluation findings to build relationships with other local authorities and attract funding. www.theaward.org/scotland.
