School Transport: MPs slate Bill as seriously flawed

The Government's approach to school transport is "seriously flawed", according to a cross-party group of MPs.

A report, published last week by the House of Commons Select Committee on Transport, criticised the Government for not sufficiently addressing the issue of statutory walking distances in its draft School Transport Bill.

They also agreed that walking to school was the healthiest and most environmentally friendly option in most cases.

"Setting a limit beyond which free transport will be provided gives a clear signal that below that limit it is reasonable for children to walk. The question is: what limit is appropriate?" said the report.
