Education News: Wales - School Transport Bill divides sector

The Government's plans for school transport have divided the children's sector in Wales.

Half of respondents to a consultation by the Welsh Assembly agreed with the proposal in the School Transport Bill that free transport should only be granted to children who receive free school meals.

But the remaining 50 per cent of respondents did not consider the proposals to be fair, with many concerned that children with disabilities and special educational needs would lose out. There were also concerns that children from large families would be disadvantaged.

The Bill is now in the House of Lords following its third reading in the Commons in December.
