Education News brief: School Transport - Fresh look at free transport criteria

The Government could extend the eligibility for free transport to school to cover working families on low incomes in the School Transport Bill.

The Bill currently says that children who receive free school meals should receive free transport to school. This would cover a child whose parent was in receipt of income support, income-based jobseeker's allowance or child tax credit - but not the working tax credit - and with an income of less than 13,230.

In the Bill's committee stage last week, David Kidney, Labour MP for Stafford, said this would put a straitjacket on English local education authorities. In Wales, the Welsh Assembly can choose any set of criteria it wants. The Bill passed through its committee stage without amendment.
