DCSF seeks free transport reform

1 min read Education
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is in talks with tax officials to better identify children who are eligible for free school transport.

In its response to the House of Commons' Transport Committee's report into school transport, the government has confirmed that the DCSF and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs are now in talks to improve the mechanism for recognising children entitled to free school transport.

The government conceded that councils are struggling to get the tax credit information needed to identify families.

The government response says: "We agree with the committee that the mechanism for identifying children eligible for the extended entitlement to free school transport could be improved, as we know that some local authorities have experienced difficulty in identifying those parents who are in receipt of maximum Working Tax Credit."
