MPs' worries on DCSF are rebuffed

1 min read
The government has defended the structure and work of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) following criticism from an influential cross-party group of MPs.

In April, the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee raised concerns about the DCSF, in particular the challenges posed by joint working between various parts of government (CYP Now, 23-29 April). It also warned that The Children's Plan's targets and timescales had not been fully set out.

In its response to the committee's report this week, the government said: "It is certainly true that successful delivery in DCSF's areas of policy demands effective joint working with partners and other government departments, but this should not be confused with a lack of clarity over responsibility."

It also insisted a clear timetable for delivery was an important part of The Children's Plan, adding that a report detailing the progress made towards the plan's objectives would be published at the end of 2008.
