The Children and Young People Strategy, launched by fire minister Angela Smith last week, has six specific aims: involving young people in designing services; preventing and reducing youth fire crime; offering diversionary activities; educating young people in fire safety and responsibility; establishing work with young people as a mainstream activity for the service and developing the workforce accordingly; and identifying and promoting best practice.
The document cites examples of best practice including the London-based Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) project and Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Scheme (JFIS). It aims to help fire and rescue services contribute to local youth and crime strategies and the Every Child Matters outcomes.
