Youth arson: Sure Start to work with fire services

Fire services are to work with Sure Start children's centres in an attempt to cut youth arson.

The move is set out in an action plan launched last week by theDepartment for Communities and Local Government. Under the action plan,centres will be expected to raise awareness of fire safety usingmaterials produced by the communities department and the Department forEducation and Skills.

In addition, the Government will do more to make youth justiceprofessionals more aware of fire and rescue service training that showshow to stop young people committing arson.

The Action Plan 06-08: Strategy for fire and rescue service working withchildren and young people is part of a longer-term strategy.

Since 2001, youth arson attacks have almost halved. However, hoax callsand attacks on fire fighters are still disproportionately committed byyoung people. Teenagers also start 40 per cent of all deliberateproperty and vehicle fires.
