A five-year strategy published by the Office of the Deputy PrimeMinister last week sets out several ways in which the Government expectsfire services to fit in with the wider children's agenda.
In particular, fire services are expected to work with other agencies tohelp identify children who may be getting involved in arson and toestablish information-sharing arrangements.
As well as working with school-age children, the Government also wantsfire services to do more work with pre-school children. The Strategy forChildren and Young People: 2006-2010 also proposes an annual award torecognise children's contribution to this work.
Sir Graham Meldrum, president of the Fire Services Youth TrainingAssociation, said the strategy makes work with children an integral partof the fire service.
