Education minister Alan Johnson wants schools to be more creative in the ways that they teach young people. He wants them to break out of the confines of the school grounds and use the wealth of "educational opportunities" on their doorsteps and further afield. Discuss the merits of learning away from the classroom.
Ask young people if they think they learn more away from school. Do the lessons learned on trips stick in the memory come exam time? Do young people think that all lessons should be taught away from school? Is classroom-based learning too boring?
Many schools have been reluctant to take young people away in case something goes wrong. There have been occasions where teachers have been prosecuted because a pupil has been injured or died on a trip. The Government now wants to ensure teachers get treated fairly in the event of accidents. Do young people think this is a good change?
