Opinion: Debate - Should children get a minimum number of school trips?

1 min read
Many children are afraid of their environment, according to a new report from Demos and the Green Alliance. They have called on the Government to give children an entitlement to outdoor learning in a bid to change the situation

YES - Gillian Thomas, researcher at Demos and co-author of the A Child's Place report

The most engaging and memorable lessons are those that do not happen in the classroom. Too often schools, even extended ones, act as gated communities and children cannot see how their learning is relevant in the wider world. A minimum number of school trips would reskill teachers and encourage a greater number of low-cost "school safaris", such as to the library or to the park, which would enable children to take ownership over local issues that directly affect them.

NO - John Dunford, general secretary of the Secondary Heads Association
