There was outcry when it was revealed that men suspected of offences against children had been allowed to teach. Chloe Stothart looks at how employers can protect children and themselves when recruiting.

"Has one of your pupils ever had a crush on you and what did you doabout it?" a head teacher asks a nervous interviewee for a job in aschool. "Er, well, yes. There was a 14-year-old girl when I was workingin one school," admits the candidate. "I didn't want to hurt herfeelings so just went for a drink with her once."

"What did you learn and how would you handle the situation differently?"probes the head teacher. "Erm, nothing. Well, I thought what I did wasokay," the candidate replies. The head might beg to differ and questionwhat the responses say about the candidate's attitude towards the pupilsin his care.
