In Practice: Know how - Recruitment

1 min read
Staff are the most valuable asset in children's centres and extended schools so it's vital to get recruitment right. In fact it's one of the first things you should think about when establishing a new service. You're not only looking for people with the right skills, but also those who can work as part of a multi-agency team.

Spending time writing a clear job description will pay dividends. Lookat adverts from other local authorities for inspiration. Ensure you giveas much information to candidates as possible including jobspecifications, equalities statement, work/life balance options andbackground.

Your recruitment practice should positively include individuals andgroups to create a team that reflects your community. Incorporatepositive images and inclusive statements in recruitment literature andadvertising and think about how you reach under-represented groups.

Advertise widely. Don't limit yourself to one kind of specialist media.Make sure you don't miss potential candidates such as parents on yourdoorstep. Advertising in your neighbourhood has the added benefit ofraising awareness of your setting. And use your contacts - it's a goodway of getting your message across without breaking the budget.
