Resources: Review - A traditional guide to UK outdoor education

2 mins read

However, it does give a flavour of the philosophical, theoretical and professional influences that have directed outdoor education over the past 20 years and puts them in the context of applied practice. This is found in the chapters called "Teaching and learning strategies", "A model of the processes of personal development through the medium of outdoor adventure", and "Outdoor leadership: art or science".

Many of the chapters in the text will be familiar reading for the experienced outdoor educator and will, therefore, provide a reminder of the key principles of outdoor education. For the less experienced outdoor educator, the main value of the book is that most of the chapters provide a good overall introduction to the rich mix of ideas behind outdoor education. The most useful chapters for this are "Risk in outdoor education", "Outdoor education as a vehicle of integrated learning in the school curriculum" and "The contribution of outdoor education to environmental awareness and sustainability".
