Resources: Review - A refreshing look at mental health

1 min read
It is refreshing to find a book about the promotion of good mental health in children and young people. As practitioners, we spend so much time struggling with mental illness, family dysfunction and social disadvantage that we can lose sight of positives.

Promoting the Emotional Well-Being of Children brings togetherperspectives from a diverse range of practitioners. Their preventativeand early intervention approaches fit well with the Government'snational service framework for children and emphasise that youngpeople's mental health is "everybody's business" and points tomulti-agency services as the way ahead.

The book is well grounded in developmental and systemic theory, but italso includes examples of how such theories apply to real-lifesituations with practical examples of how mental health promotionstrategies can be implemented in local communities.

Almost all of the 15 chapters were written by different authors, eachwith their own style. Some of the chapters read as reviews of relevantliterature with a focus on evidence-based interventions. I thought thiswas particularly true of the chapters on child development, attachmenttheory and emotional regulation.
