Author Peter Wilson, director of Young Minds, raises the awareness of the mental health needs of children and young people and the key role schools play. Through understanding and support, children and young people are "enabled to learn": without these they will not achieve their potential in education and later life.
He starts with the importance of the school ethos. Wilson stresses that schools need to have policies and structures that are applied fairly and consistently, and staff who can spend time talking and listening to pupils.
Wilson believes raising self-esteem is crucial to achievement, improving emotional wellbeing and building resilience. Schools need a culture of emotional literacy, and the book outlines ways to develop this. Wilson could have highlighted the vital role that whole-school programmes are playing, but the appendices do give details of organisations and references to aid further investigations.
