Broader child protection training for mental health nurses could be introduced following recommendations from the mental health nursing review, launched last week.
Tim McDougall, chair of the National Network for Nurse Consultants Working in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, will represent child and adolescent mental health services on the review's steering group.
He said the review would address concerns that current child protection training focused on an old-fashioned approach, such as looking for signs of bruising.
He said it would recommend protection procedures in line with the Change for Children agenda, focusing on mental illness, educational failure, offending behaviour and helping children to achieve their potential.
