Health News: Mental Health - Children's access to be more flexible

Moves are underway to give children a bigger say in how they access mental health services, Children Now has learned.

Tim McDougall, a nurse consultant and member of the steering groupoverseeing a Chief Nursing Officer consultation on mental healthnursing, said policies to give children more choice in services would be"taking shape" during the next 12 months.

His comments follow the publication last week of the Chief NursingOfficer's review of mental health nursing, which highlighted proposalsto give children more of a say.

McDougall said children should be encouraged to choose which therapythey received and whether they were treated by a man or a woman.

He added that they should also be able to choose where they were treatedsince many preferred to be seen at a school or library rather than aclinic.
