An Ofsted report has revealed that schools are failing to identify children with mental health problems because of a lack of training.

Schools are failing to identify half of pupils with mental healthproblems, an Ofsted report has found.

Schools estimate that around one in 20 pupils have a mental healthproblem, but the Department of Health believes the figure is closer toone in 10.

The Healthy Minds: promoting emotional health and well-being in schoolsreport, which is based on evidence from 72 Ofsted inspections, foundthat only half of schools were even aware of the Government's standardson health in the classroom (the National Healthy School Standard). Theauthors found that staff in three quarters of schools needed training onmental health. But even when training was available a third of it wasfound to be unsatisfactory.
