Research has revealed that the percentage of pupils eating school meals has fallen in many areas, which could hit Government targets on take-up.

Local authorities face an uphill struggle to meet Government targets onincreasing the percentage of children eating school meals, according tothe results of a School Food Trust-commissioned survey of cateringproviders.

The Government wants to increase the proportion eating school meals byfour per cent by March 2008 and by 10 per cent by autumn 2009, but thislatest survey of just under 100 local authority catering providers foundthat the number of pupils eating meals is plummeting (Children Now,19-25 July).

The survey found the percentage of pupils eating school meals during2005/06 fell six per cent to 42.3 per cent in primary schools and wasdown by just under five per cent to 42.7 per cent in secondaryschools.
