Research has revealed that many pupils who decline to go on residential trips do so because of the cost, while disability is a barrier for others.

Nearly two-thirds of pupils who turn down the chance to go on a schooltrips do so because they cannot afford it, according to a newreport.

Research into residential opportunities available for young peoplethrough schools, which was published last week, revealed that the thirdof pupils who do not go on school trips cite cost as one of the mainbarriers. The Department for Education and Skills' report revealed thatthe average cost of a residential school trip is 140 althoughnearly half of trips are subsidised.

Disability was cited as another barrier that prevents children fromgoing on school trips. The report said "indications are that manyresidential facilities are not yet Disability Discrimination Actcompliant".
