Research by the universities of Bristol and Newcastle has reported thatthe vast majority of school-age mums-to-be will not return to schoolafter they have conceived.
The Education of Pregnant Young Women and Young Mothers in England alsofound that schools and professionals who work with young pregnant womenbelieve a lack of affordable and accessible childcare is the main reasonthese teenagers don't go back to school.
The report found specialist units at schools providing creche facilitieswith staff who can pass on parenting skills were the best way of helpingteenage mothers back into education.
Dr Nona Dawson, researcher at the Graduate School of Education at theUniversity of Bristol, said local authorities should hire reintegrationofficers to help young mothers go back to school. "We also heard aboutbullying and negative attitudes from teachers, which we thought could beminimised through increased awareness during teacher training," sheadded.
