Research commissioned by the trust found significant falls in theproportion of children eating schools meals in England. In primaryschools six per cent fewer children ate school dinners in 2005/06. Andthe percentage of secondary schoolchildren eating school meals fell byfive per cent.
Catering firms questioned by the researchers said publicity aboutpoor-quality school meals and children moving to packed lunches afterschools introduced healthy meals were the main reasons for thedecline.
The report also found that the cost of school dinners in both primaryand secondary schools is rising faster than inflation and that one infive primary schools lacks cooking facilities.
