1. The United Nations estimated that in 2004 there were 9.7 million refugees. Listen to some shrill voices and it may seem like most of them are here in the UK. In fact, about half are in Asia and 22 per cent in Africa, while the UK holds two per cent. One very obvious way to start looking at the refugee issue is to try to find out the true facts about who bears the brunt of caring for refugees. Get young people to research the issues and set a quiz. The Refugee Council recommends a "mythbuster" approach to the subject, matched closely to the kind of lies and distortions that young people are most likely to encounter elsewhere.
