1Yoga is, broadly speaking, a variety of spiritual beliefs and practices that originated in India and that take you towards an understanding of the meaning of existence. The word means "union", implying union with the divine. Yoga took thousands of years to evolve, influencing and influenced by great religions including Hinduism and Buddhism.
2In the West, yoga has been widely adopted as a form of physical culture. Some people go the whole hog and study the spiritual and religious background, others are happy to see it as "Indian-flavoured exercise". Some evangelical Christians see even the exercise as incompatible with their religion, and vicars have been known to ban it from church halls.
