Snoring is the sound made when a person breathes through their mouth and nose when they are asleep. It happens when air does not move smoothly through the air passages, which causes tissue in the mouth, nose and throat to vibrate

- Snoring is usually harmless in the majority of cases but it can sometimes be a sign of sleep apnoea, which is when a blockage in a person's airway causes them to stop breathing for a few seconds

- Last week it was reported that a urine test could be used to differentiate between dangerous and safe snoring. A study of 90 children referred to a clinic to be evaluated for breathing problems in sleep found that a number of proteins were increased in the urine of those children diagnosed with dangerous snoring

- There is no miracle cure for snoring but lifestyle changes can often be successful in having an impact. Snorers should maintain a healthy diet and weight, get regular exercise, and attempt to sleep on their sides rather than on their backs. They are also advised to try to keep their nasal passages clear, so that they are able to breathe in through their nose rather than through their mouth
