1. Mediation is a structured process, voluntarily entered into, in which a neutral third person helps those involved in a conflict or disagreement to find some kind of solution that they can both agree on. It's not advocacy, advice, counselling, guidance or arbitration and no judgment or ruling is made.
2. Be aware that mediation is not always going to be possible or appropriate. It only works when everyone is willing to take part, is prepared to be honest and open, is committed to reaching some form of modus vivendi for the future, and everyone feels safe. Any coercion or threat of violence and it's not going to be appropriate, which is also the case if what the situation really needs is a legal judgment.
