All youth workers can expect to come across situations between young people that look like they could brew into violence. Actual bodily harm may be under way when you arrive. So be prepared with this no-panic, no-machismo guide to downsizing a conflict.

1. If a fight has actually started, the first task is to stop it. You won't want to intervene physically. So try calling out their names, slamming a door or just shouting as loudly as you can. Anything surprising or unexpected should interrupt them at least momentarily. And that will be long enough for you to persuade them to break it up.
