1 Agree the rules with young people, don't impose them. Make time to talk about why they are important. Return to them at regular intervals. Don't ignore them until there is a blatant infraction.

Instead, make a point of asking whether the ground rules are working.

Do they need adapting in any way? The group may want to rule out hurtful teasing or bullying. But might that also put an end to good-humoured joshing? Talk about the difference.

2 Be totally upfront about any rules that are non-negotiable. If the building has a no smoking rule, don't waste time pretending it is something that young people have agreed. You may want to insist on no racist or sexist language or behaviour. Again, be honest about that as a given rule.
