1. There is no point patronising or punishing young people about smoking, says Ben Youdan, campaign director of No Smoking Day. A better approach is an empowerment one. Help young people look at why they smoke. What forces are influencing them? How important is the peer pressure of older friends and siblings?
2. Around 26 per cent of 15-year-old young women are regular smokers. That compares with 21 per cent of young men the same age. One reason girls smoke is simply because they are targeted. Magazines show informal and attractive pictures of celebrities smoking. Talk to young people about who is making smoking seem cool and why.
