Resources: Quick guide to ... barbecues

2 mins read

1 The barbecue is the one time when contemporary men seem to want to take over the cooking. It could be they are involved in a gender war with primeval roots. A psychiatrist sought out by gas supplier Calor says the chef may be acting out a "contemporary pantomime of his former life as a hunter-gatherer". While men do most of the cooking, 78 per cent of women say they actually do the majority of the shopping and food preparation for barbecues. Many men want the kudos, but are happy to shirk when it comes to the drudgery.

2 The barbie offers many opportunities for the youth group, from fundraiser to reward to simple social event. The bigger the event, the more it will need planning. If your event warrants it, get volunteers for specific tasks such as assembling the equipment; obtaining the food, drinks, serving equipment, plates and cups; preparing and cooking the food; serving the food and clearing up.
