1. The learning opportunities of outdoor eating are as plentiful as the grains of sand in a beach barbecue hot dog. From menu planning, shopping, logistics, food preparation and storage to nutrition, rights and responsibilities of land use ... it just goes on and on. Then there's the circus skills of how to juggle a drink, a kebab, and a red-hot cob of grilled sweet corn while scooping up a dip with a wet lettuce leaf.
2. Picnics don't have the fire element, but can be fun. Bring your own is simplest, but individualistic and impossible for some young people.
Better to encourage central planning and co-ordination of at least some elements. Ask about and respect food preferences, including intolerances and allergies. Try to get young people to do some fresh-food preparation.
