The winners of an artwork and written word competition for pupils aged five to fifteen in the South East of England will be announced at the event, which is being held as part of Refugee Week (14-20 June).
The artwork is based on the theme of journeys, focusing on the experience of leaving your homeland for a mysterious destination. Personal accounts of being a refugee are given by young people from Iraq and Kosovo.
MORI polls held during Refugee Week 2002 and 2003 showed that young people in the UK have negative and ill-informed views about refugees and asylum seekers. This year the organisers aim to engage the interest of young people through events such as this competition, giving them the opportunity to learn more about the issues facing refugees.
