The report, which sets out the findings of an 18-month project exploring different methods of teaching school-aged asylum seekers and refugees, was launched at a meeting of the Pupil Inclusion Network held in Doncaster on 12 May.
The project, funded by the Lloyds TSB Foundation, aimed to identify best practice in helping this group to acquire English, integrate quickly and access the curriculum. It also looked at specific challenges for 14- to- 19-year-olds.
Its recommendations include the introduction of buddy schemes, providing intensive English tuition and the need to tailor homework assignments.
Highlighting the importance of language acquisition, one Year 10 pupil commented: "You have to be able to follow what is going on in class. If you understand the questions properly, you are half way to getting the answers."
